[ after asking lena for some advice as a twenty-seven year old, cora had thought to simply let sleeping dogs lie. but derek's stupid, just like she's stupid, and she wants to make sure that something changes in their future. him sacrificing the one thing that makes him stronger than peter, stronger than almost anyone in mystic falls, just for her, isn't something she wants to happen. maybe wonderland showed them their futures to give them a chance to fix them. (all she can remember is his eyes were red once, only to turn blue again — and all after he touched her.) ]
[ hence, this text. she thinks to call him, to knock on his door, but a text is a little impersonal — and she needs it to be just that. he can't see her face or hear her tone to understand how she's feeling. (she doesn't understand it at all.) ]
[ Derek had run the gamut of ages throughout this entire event-- there'd been a stint where he was older, had been his current age with disoriented memories, had been younger and even gone so far as to run into a doppelganger of his high school love. It still stung, even now, and he's avoided talking about it ever since it happened. Not that anyone would blame him, but he doesn't even know who's in the know about it. Something tells him a few members of the pack would be, but he's resolutely decided to keep it to himself so that he isn't forced into talking about it.
It'd been a strange thing, overall, but now his focus is on the message that Cora sends to him. Considering the pack and their frequent texts, it's not particularly surprising that he gets one. Isaac is the main culprit in texts, but it isn't exclusive to him.
He just has to question what this one might be about. ]
I wasn't going to. Not after everything she's already dealing with. She just got kidnapped to some place she's never been, and is already visibly traumatized.
We need to tell her, but not right now. Not when she's barely anchored to anything. She'd hurt herself or someone else.
how mad at me would you be if I forgot to mention someone shot me in the woods with a crossbow a while ago ...? I got distracted and put the bolt down and uh you know what nevermind
[ Nico accepts that he can't hide forever, and maybe that's true. he definitely can't continuously intrude on Mary Margaret's space, no matter how often she assures him that she doesn't mind. plus- Nico just needs a change of scenery, if only for a little while.
hanging out in Derek's room had barely even been a question and more of an obvious invitation extended. because while all of them were different from the people they had been in that alternate world, some things did stay the same and the trust lingered, the connection remained. despite how little he often trusted in and depended upon people, he found himself thankful for the comfort that stayed with him in the aftermath of the fake memories.
which is likely why he manages to be stretched out on the floor of Derek and Stiles' bedroom. and maybe that's part of it, too. part of why Nico isn't so scared for Derek to know the truth about him. because it isn't just Derek, it's Derek and Stiles, both of whom he remembers from their time in school.
the floor is cold beneath him and Nico debates on simply melting into the shadow on the floor, because sometimes that feels easier than existing in this place. but that's one thing he can congratulate himself on; he might be hiding, but at least he hasn't gone very far this time. something else to thank his newfound friends for, maybe. (friends; what a concept.)
Nico turns his head to the side to look up at where Derek is in the room, lifting the hand holding his phone out to him. ]
Are these things always this annoying? [ it wasn't like he had electronics at his disposal back in his world, paired with the fact that things like these communication devices didn't exist when he was growing up in the 30's. ]
[ As someone who spent years hiding (and running), who can get overwhelmed by people when he's forced to deal with them for so long, Derek hardly questions Nico's presence in his room. Though the memories might have been false, might have been forced on them by Wonderland, that doesn't change the fact that there are still emotions connected to those memories and the people associated with them. Nico is just as welcome in his room in the mansion as he was in Derek's dorm room, when he was fifteen and cocky, a place he hasn't been in a very, very long time.
Stiles is with pack, Scott or Cora or Isaac, at the very least safe if not happy (because when you wake up from nightmares as frequently as either of them do, you have to hold onto what you can get). So it's just the two of them and the animals in the room, with Paige laying against Nico's hip to keep him company. Derek sits at his desk, feet propped up and puppy curled up in his lap while he goes through the various books that he and Stiles have collected from the library and the closets, marking notes in the margins and adding tabs to reference them later. Mythology and folklore is still just as useful here as it was back home, especially considering the various worlds everyone comes from.
There isn't really any need to talk-- they'd already had that moment earlier, and this is the moment where he can relax in a safe environment, away from those that he's hiding from. Much as he loves his packmates, he understands that feeling pretty well. The silence is comfortable, there's no pressure to speak, and it's just... nice.
It doesn't matter that this is the first time that he and Nico have interacted as what they are, doesn't matter that he smells something like grave dirt and frost, something he associates with death but not in any sort of ominous way. It's just... a funeral's scent, almost.
When he notices Nico moving, Derek angles his head around his book and onto his shoulder, looking down at the phone. Swiveling in his chair, he drops his feet and carefully rolls forward, reaching to take the phone from him. ]
Well, depends. Good for emergencies and late nights, bad when you want to be left alone.
[ in hindsight, it's weird, being the oldest in an alternate reality. would things have ended differently if she had been born first? she thinks not. the world would be worse if she had been the eldest, the heir to a pack and a dynasty her own mother had crafted with her own claws. it's not a thought she really gives life to, preferring to snuff it out with the heel of her foot instead. despite what others may believe, cora enjoys being the youngest — she may put on an open show of dislike toward derek's antics, but she prefers his acts of affection as the eldest. even as the youngest, he'd still been the same, trying to get his sister to smile, enjoy herself, even embarrass herself a little. it's not on her list of things to change, their birth order. ]
[ try as she might, it's difficult for her to close her eyes and not see that handsome, young face of an older brother she can't commit to memory. she'll never be able to remember a moment at the age of fifteen where his face began to change shape, stubble lining his chin, and her making fun of him for something that she can't even remember, let alone even pretend to have a memory of. she doesn't even remember the moment his own smooth skin had begun to itch with whiskers. seeing that boy, that part of derek that had been stolen from her, hurts. rather than hide away from it and lock herself away from him, cora decides to reach out — maybe what an older sister does to her little brother (or perhaps it's simply something a sister does for a brother, regardless of whether she's older or younger). ]
[ either way, there's no way in hell cora's passing up this opportunity. she wants to hear or see or feel him smile. ]
[ In hindsight, it's weird being the youngest in an alternate reality. But what balances that fact out for Derek is the painful memories that come from being that age, from having been a teenager after a certain point. What softens that pain is the fact that nothing had changed, between him and Cora. They were still similar of temperament, and he was still trying to get her out there to enjoy herself. Maybe it was hypocritical of him, but he wants his sister to be happy no matter what their ages are, no matter what realities they find themselves to be in, no matter the circumstances.
She'd had it taken from her, after all. And while he'd lost his own happiness for a long time, he'd had Laura with him. It was his turn to do for Cora what Laura did for him, even if she pretends annoyance and exasperation in response to the things that he does. They both missed out on certain points in their lives, after all.
Derek is going to make up for that, even if he rolls his eyes every now and then himself. ]
