... a couple months... I did mean to tell you I brought the bolt back with me but it uh got kicked under my bed and I forgot No the weird thing was I couldn't catch a scent and the heartbeat I heard it was wrong ..
a lot of stuff has been going on. Well it didn't move normally some times it'd be on my left and then other times on my right then it'd be in front of me one second and behind me the next but I never saw em The sounds didn't add up either ..
[ It'll be all right, even if he's exasperated and worried all at once. ]
Yeah. It's fine if you are, Isaac.
That... [ There's a long pause as his brow furrows and he thinks. ] I don't know what could do that, but this is Wonderland. Were the sounds consistent or were they sudden?
That doesn't make any sense. You're sure it was one heartbeat. [ Not a question, so much as confirmation. ]
Even tame deer don't like being near us. The only exception would be if they've got the same lack of instinct that the cats do. Was that before or after you were shot?
I'm sure it was one heartbeat. Listening is the only thing I'm really good at with these senses
It felt like some kinda test .. If I'd moved out of the way it would have hit the deer instead of me. It was before and during But usually the deer here run from me in the woods.
Okay one sec.
[ And a few moments later, he will show up at Derek's door, with the blanket he'd been gifted tied around him like a cape of warmth. Sheepishly, he brings a hand up to knock at the door. Maybe he's not fully convinced Derek isn't gonna hulk out at him. His other hand has the bolt tucked away behind the blanket in case the others decide to walk through the hallway. ]
[ Rather than answer, Derek takes the information that he's given and waits for Isaac. Wonderland throws a lot of strange things at them with a decent frequency, but this is just weird even for this place. It definitely sounds like a test, something to see what Isaac would do.
But he doesn't come to any real conclusion by the time that Isaac knocks on the door, and he just gets up from where he was seated and swiveling to and fro in thought at his desk. The sight of the blanket softens the concern in his chest, and he chuffs softly. ]
C'mon. [ He's still frustrated that Isaac didn't tell him immediately after it happened, but his stance and scent don't give way to anger. ]
[ Isaac ducks his head a little submissively before handing the bolt to Derek. Then quietly he scurries past Derek to seat himself on the floor by the bed. He's not used to being in trouble with Derek here, and while he knows Derek would never hurt him again, it's still ingrained in him to want to disappear when someone is mad at him.
Really, it's a matter of self control not to climb into his nest. So he just sits there, legs drawn up to his chest, staring at Derek in a mixture of thought and careful observation. ] I wasn't gonna let the deer die. Besides I could heal.
[ Call it a bleeding heart but he hadn't even thought of the what if there was poison on it... ] Whatever it was didn't chase me after I ran.
[ Rather than lashing out over Isaac's lapse, Derek simply nods his head as he's given the bolt. He holds it close to his side so that anyone that might pass by can't see it, and accepts the submissive posture as the two things it is: Isaac knows that he's unhappy about this, and he's so ingrained to appease that he's immediately trying to make himself look smaller.
He shuts the door again and waits until Isaac's folded himself up on the floor, moving to set the bolt carefully on his desk. His movements remain slow, and instead of aggression-- disappointment would've led Isaac's father into punishing him, anger that Derek had mimicked to get Isaac to run from him for his own safety-- he crouches down in front of him. ]
Then it was a test of some kind. [ Careful in his movements, he tips forward, bunting their foreheads together and staying like that. ] That was a stupid risk, but you did the right thing.
[ The first thing that runs through Isaac's head when he watches Derek set the bolt down is fear. That means Derek's attention is on something other than what Isaac was hoping it'd be on. Then he crouches down in front of the teenager and he holds his breath without even realising it. His gaze falls to the floor immediately.
He's about to apologise again, ramble on about how he got distracted but then Derek speaks and blue eyes are back on the Alpha and then boop, Derek's resting his forehead against his own. It causes Isaac to relax almost immediately, letting go of the air he'd held between two lungs. He takes it a step further however, and before Derek can even try to get away, arms are wrapping around him. Isaac isn't the huggiest, but it's another peace offering.
When he draws back is when he speaks. ]
Do you think I passed? Do you think that's why whatever it was let me go?
[ Guilt wells up in him again as he watches the younger wolf, but he swallows it down in the face of reassuring him. His father isn't here, and he has no intentions of other repeating the things that either of them had done. It's safe here, in the quiet of his room.
There's been a few occasions where Derek and Isaac have hugged, but they aren't that numerous. (Strangely, he's found himself hugging almost everyone in the pack since they arrived in Wonderland. Something he'd never have anticipated before.) But Isaac reaching forward and wrapping his arms around him gives him pause, and he brings a hand up to stroke his fingers through his curly hair rather than return the gesture completely. It lets Isaac initiate and end the hug on his terms, further reassurance that it's all okay.
When he does draw back, he moves as well, dropping to sit on the floor with a dull thump. The desk is close enough that he can lean and reach up, nudging his fingers at the bolt until he can get one end closer to him to pick it up again. ]
It was looking for a reaction of some kind. I don't know if you passed its test or not, but it got an answer to whatever question it was looking for. What it was, what the question might've been, why they did it... we don't know. But we'll find out.
[ Baby blues watch the bolt in Derek's hands, still the teenager seems like he's trying to draw into himself, but he looks a lot more relaxed. Arms move to wrap around his knees so he can prop his chin on one. ]
It didn't hurt as much as Allison's arrows. [ It had been painful though, as well as ripping the damn thing out of him. He's pretty sure it was numbed by the sheer adrenaline though. ]
I - I thought it was Dean at first - But he's just human, he wouldn't have... He wouldn't have been able to do that, right?
Probably means that it wasn't coated in wolfsbane or anything similar. [ Mistletoe, wolf lichen. Hell, even kanima venom. Derek turns the bolt over in his fingers carefully, before he brings it up to eye level to give it a closer lookover. He can smell Isaac on it, between having been in his room for months and the fact that his blood had coated it when he'd taken the hit. But he can't really get another scent off of it.
Either because it's too old, or because they used some means of covering up their scent. ]
No, Dean wouldn't have been able to pull off something like that. And I imagine he would've gone for the kill, instead of doing some elaborate trick. [ Turning the bolt about, he runs his thumb along the smooth edge of the arrowhead, careful not to meet the sharp edge or the point. ] We're gonna go look for it.
no subject
[ No, but he knows Isaac well enough by now. ]
Hypothetically. You didn't think to tell anyone this?
Did you see who it was? How long is a while ago?
no subject
[ It would be worth getting maimed for that. ]
... a couple months...

I'll want to see it for sure.

Sudden.
They didn't match where the heartbeat was.
There's something stranger
Y'know how deer usually run from us?
One of em came right up to me
I could have pet it .
Now?

That doesn't make any sense.

Now is fine. Stiles is with Scott, I think.
