[ His responses are slow, as he measures his words. After a moment of thought, however, he decides on what he wants to say. It means opening that can of worms, but Stiles and Scott remember what happened with their mirrors. She must remember everything, as well.
Still. ]
Most people don't know what it's like to have your body used to hurt someone. I think I think actions speak louder than words, for that kind of promise. You know what I am. What're you going to do?
You're not the first werewolf I've met in Wonderland.
[Ruby. Remus. Her conversations with Ruby had been tense, especially when the girl herself had admitted that she might not be able to control herself, but once Jo understood the situation, she adjusted. She offered to help stand guard and keep anyone from coming after Ruby while she was shifted, but if things got out of control, Ruby trusted her to put a stop to it, whatever that wound up meaning.
It was drastically different from what she might have done two years ago.]
A werewolf is still a person 28 days out of the month. At least where I'm from. It's different there. They can't control themselves. Even locked up, they always get out, and people always die. Putting a stop to it isn't easy when you remember that they're people, too, but it has to be done.
You're different. You can control yourself. As long as you're not hurting anyone, you don't have any reason to be afraid of me.
No, I don't suppose I am. And I won't be the last, either. Not with a pack that's been established here for months.
[ She might as well know. Derek wouldn't say a damn thing, even with everything the demon tried to torture him with, but here he can at the very least admit that she's essentially surrounded by werewolves, considering she's interacting with him, Allison, and Stiles on a regular enough basis now. But he's not about to tell her who makes the pack up-- she's smart, he saw it when they first met, she'll figure it out if she really cares to think about it.
This place is different, but so is the pack. We're not the same wolves that make up most folklore in a lot of ways. There are some where we're from that would hurt someone without a second thought, but that's not the norm and that's not who we are. We'd warn you in advance if they ever showed up here, because we're predators but we're not killers. We protect people who need it.
[ This next text comes a little bit later, as he considers. If he's got her figured out like he thinks he might... ]
I'm not afraid for myself. I'm worried for my pack. They're just kids, and they'd never willingly hurt anyone. Unless this place does something, their anchors are strong and you won't have to worry about them.
Your pack is your family. It makes sense that you'd want to protect them, just like I want to look out for my family.
I don't know what kind of hunters you've known in the past. I do my job, but not indiscriminately. I haven't had to do it here, aside from the monsters Wonderland itself has thrown at us. I'm planning to keep it that way. You say you're protectors, not killers. Well, so am I.
Your family doesn't have anything to worry about from us.
[ Oh if only you could hear that bitter laugh, Jo. ]
There's a Code, where we're from, that hunters are supposed to follow. They're only supposed to hunt werewolves who do harm, so long as there's proof. They don't kill younger werewolves, especially children. Above all else, they don't kill humans that're involved with the pack. Some families follow it, but these days most don't. They'll kill an entire pack, wolves and humans alike, and call it a service.
So I want to believe you, the same as you want to believe me.
We both have plenty of reason to be wary. If we want to believe each other, then all we can really do is wait and see if we're good to our word. Maybe after awhile you'll be able to trust me.
About the only thing that we can do. Trust takes time without unfortunate circumstances attached. If it's any comfort I don't have any intentions of telling anyone what happened.
[ Sorry in advance if Stiles weasels it out of him, though. ]
It's not for anyone else to know. But it's appreciated. If that gets out, it'll expose everyone else by proxy. If anything happens, though, I'll [ hesitant on this but ] give you a heads up. Someone should know if the actual monsters show up here.
Appreciated. If it puts anyone here in danger, then I'll want to know. You and I both have people to protect. If it comes to that and the actual monsters do turn up, maybe we can help each other.
